Stevia is a zero calorie sweetener that is naturally derived from the Stevia plant. A wealth of research shows it to be completely safe. When coming in contact with teeth it can inhibit the development of plaque and reduce or kill bacteria. Because it’s much sweeter than regular sugar, very low amounts can be used for the same taste.
A 2013 study showed Stevia has a carbon footprint that is 55% lower than beet sugar, 79% lower than high fructose corn syrup and 29% lower than cane sugar. It only needs 1/5 of the land and less water. The people of Paraguay have been using it as a sweetener since the 16th century.
Besides a sweet taste, Stevia also contains minerals like calcium, zinc and iron, vitamins A, B and C, proteins, and electrolytes like potassium and sodium.
Stevia has been shown to be effective against salmonella, many pathogenic bacteria, and Candida albicans.
